The Son of God in Place of Others on the Cross: Giving up His life out of His Love

As the Substitute for the sin of the world, the Only-begotten Son of God gave up His life on the cross of Calvary.

For God hath made Christ to be sin for us, who knew no sin;

that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him. 2 Corinthians 5:21.

It cost His life to pay the debt of transgressions which we all have done.

Instead of all of us

Because, we all we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way;

And the Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all;

Therefore, He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities; Isaiah 53:5, 6.

But Christ also came into the world to convince humans that although they have sinned against God,

God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. John 3:16.

This love for humanity has constrained Him to serve on our behalf.

He made Himself of no reputation, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Philippians 2:6-8.

Thus, Jesus became the Lamb of God, who took the sin of the world. John 1:29.

This is the very same Lamb, He chose to be from eternity past, fulfilling Revelation 13:8 – the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.

When raised on the cross of Calvary by the Roman soldiers, He humbly accept the torture and prayed for them:

Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots. Luke 23:34.

That prayer also includes all who have separated themselves from God, right after the fall of our first parents down the line of time of His second coming.

One interceding for all

Jesus took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. 1 John 4:9.

Thus He took the nature of fallen humans, that He might:

Endure Satan’s temptations and be made perfect through suffering, Hebrews 2:10.
Understand the circumstances of human’s trials and how to succor those who should be tempted, Hebrews 2:18.

Thus as fully human and fully Divine, He pleads forgiveness, because They know not what they do.

Who are those people?

At the time of His crucifixion there were several groups of people:

The Roman soldiers on duty and those who erected Jesus’ cross.
Two malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.
Crowd stood beholding.
And the rulers also derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God. Luke 23:34-41.

Christ’s soul was under the burden of sin of the entire world.

But in the time of anguish, that no one else from aside can truly explain, He had a pitting love for the present audience.

Moreover, Jesus pitted not only His murderers, but all not-present who doubted and rejected Him then and through ages.

In the agonies of the crucifixion His prayer embraced the whole world.

Everyone was included – who had lived or should live – from the beginning of the world to the end of time.

Serving Others Through Prayer

Jesus leads us by example of His other-centred love revealed through His entire life and ministry.

We are to have the same desire and by His grace in humility and love, to put others’ needs even before our own.

The strength will come by beholding Jesus on the cross of Calvary.

No curses were called down upon the soldiers.

And no vengeance was invoked upon the priests and rulers, who were relishing over the accomplishment of their purpose.

Can you foster revenge in your heart while you remember the prayer that came from the pale lips of Christ for His revilers and murderers:

Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.

Therefore, my prayer for you is:

Come to the foot of the cross. Behold the royal victim suffering on your account and mine.

Look at Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith at any trials you must meet in this life.

For our sake He was rejected and despised; He became poor so that we through His poverty might be made rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9.

This will ignite and keep firing your first love to Jesus and others.

Conclusion on Christ in our stead

He served in our stead on the cross of Calvary.

Jesus hath redeemed us from the curse of the law (the law of sin and death and not the law of love and life), being made a curse for us. Galatians 3:13.

Thus He showed a love which infinite goodness alone could conceive.

God’s only-begotten Son gave evidence for it, as He gave up His life a ransom for the sins of the entire world.

Thus He became a sin Bearer and Substitute for each and everyone that lived and will live till His second coming.
